Dear CDA Families,

As we move into our 5th week of our remote launch to the school year and our 2nd full 5-day week of instruction, I am continually impressed by the resiliency and creativity of our teachers, students, and families. During these unprecedented times, we have done what is best for our students in a manner that others can emulate. Thank you so much for putting your faith in the work that we do and for continually pushing us to go that extra mile. Our students are the worthy beneficiaries of everyone’s efforts. Below are the updates for this week.

  1. We will resume with our Monday morning assembly tomorrow and September 21, meeting invitation emailed. (Monday, September 28th, is a holiday.) These meetings are in webinar format, so attendees will only be able to see me and any panelists who might be willing to share their experience with remote learning. This week I would like to highlight some of our 4th grade students, so if your child would be willing to share a story, please email me directly, and I will do my best to highlight a few perspectives. I look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow at 09:00 AM. Remember, one sign in per family.
  2. This week we will have our first Booster Club meeting on Wednesday, September 16th, at 6:30 PM, meeting invite emailed. One of the topics on our agenda is to discuss and approve our remote music program with PSArts. Parents will also have an opportunity to discuss ways that we might fundraise for next school year and to plan and consider upcoming events. This is a second chance each month to hear updates from me as well. I look forward to seeing you there. The meeting will last one hour.
  3. Thanks to our restaurant fundraising committee for planning and getting scheduled two restaurant fundraisers, the nearest one at a new restaurant, Nueva, on Washington Boulevard. Please join us on Monday, September 21, from 5:00 – 9:00 PM and Nueva will donate 20% of your entire bill back to CDA. The West Patio will also be reserved for CDA.  You can make your reservations online, making sure to note CDA Fundraiser. Curbside pickup is also available if ordered here at least 24 hours in advance. Finally, our second restaurant fundraiser will be at Sharky’s in Marina del Rey the week of October 12. More details to come!
  4. Back by popular demand, we will have a second round of Wheel and Wave’s, starting with transitional kindergarten and kindergarten on Tuesday, September 22nd at 3:15 PM. This is a wonderful way to say to hello to me, your principal, and our students’ classmates in a socially distant manner. Please wheel or walk by from 3:15 – 4:15 PM on the dates below. Thanks!
  5. There are a number of virtual after school enrichment opportunities, in addition to the one I shared last week. Chad Scheppner’s Theater 31 is offering a 10-week virtual theater session on Mondays from 2:00 – 3:00 PM. The session will run from 9/21/20 to 12/7/20.  Information will be posted soon here. Mad Science is offering after school science classes, information here. reDiscover, a local enrichment program, is offering in-person classes that start this week. Information can be found here. Finally, students ages 10-18 can take part in a variety of Youth Media Art Workshops that Venice Arts is offering. Students will learn about photography, film, comics, and animation.  Classes are held after school and begin September 14th  and end December 11th, 2020. Flyer linked.
  6. Finally, we will continue with our Storytime with Principal Jenkins on Tuesdays (TK-2) and Thursdays (Grades 3-5). Apologies for missing this past Thursday! I will make sure to sign on to both at 1:40 PM for a 1:45 PM start. Meeting invites are below.
