Dear CDA Families,

We are excited as we move forward into our 3rd week of our remote launch to the school year. We cannot thank you enough for your support of your children as they engage with their teachers. Thanks to all of our families who were able to attend our virtual Back to School Night. Please make sure to reach out to your child(ren)’s teacher(s) if you have any questions.

Below are my updates for this week. I hope everyone is able to enjoy some family time over the long weekend, September 4-7.

  1. Our first monthly Coffee and Tea with Principal (invite emailed) will be held this Wednesday, September 2, at 10:00 AM. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet other parents, hear updates, and provide input on the ways we are engaging our students in learning. These meetings will be held virtually for now on the first Wednesday of every month at 10:00 AM.
  2. Our CDA Wheel and Waves have been a huge success. We look forward to seeing our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders this week and next, dates and times below. Our Booster Club board will be on hand selling CDA merchandise. We look forward to seeing as many students and their families as possible.
  3. Mary Beth McCarthy and Renee Dewire Domino have set up a system for students to check out books from our library. Next week (9/8/20 – 9/10/20), Tuesday through Thursday (3:00 – 4:30 PM), students in various grade groups can pick up to 4 books that they reserve. Please see linked document for directions, schedules, and information. Questions can be emailed to Ms. McCarthy. Please make sure to return any books that were checked out last school year. There is a drop box right inside our main office door. Please ring the bell, 8:30 AM – 3:30 PM. Thanks.
  4. Since our teachers are creating assignments in Google drive, it is important that your child is signed into their drive with their LAUSD MyMail email account so that they can access the documents for their work.Also, you can link their drive on their Schoology page by going to Resources, Apps (left side toolbar), and link their Google drive under My Resource Apps. Thanks.
  5. Our teachers shared with you at Back to School Night their schedules and the ways in which they work with students during “synchronous” time. During a synchronous block, teachers are available to meet with their class, but some of that time will be spent with students working away from the screen with their teachers available for questions if they are not working with small groups. Teachers may schedule breakout rooms during a synchronous block and may not always be available, though. These first weeks we are working with our students to build stamina and to learn how to problem solve independently in the event their teacher is not available because s/he is working with a group of students. This happens in the physical classroom as well. Also, afternoons are spent working with small groups, so that while the schedule may say “synchronous”, it may not be for all students. One of the goals of our time with our students is to provide targeted, differentiated instruction so that teachers can monitor progress and get to know the learning needs of their students. If you have questions about any of the ways our teachers are working with your child(ren), they have office hours, scheduled by appointment, each week during which you can meet with them to get clarification. Thanks.
  6. Please join us for our first monthly Booster Club meeting on Wednesday, September 16th, at 6:30 PM, invite emailed. This is another opportunity to connect with our families and me and to lend your voice to school events and fundraising efforts. These meetings will be held the third Wednesday of every month, unless there is a vacation conflict. We look forward to seeing you there!
