Hello CDA Families!

Welcome to week 8!

Please remember that Wednesday, October 5, is an Unassigned Day, and we have no school in honor of Yom Kippur.

If you haven’t yet done so, please take a few minutes to share your thoughts about CDA on this brief survey: https://bit.ly/CDAFeedback2022. Looking at feedback thus far, three patterns for improvement schoolwide emerged related to safety, staffing aides, and homework.

Student safety is our priority. Therefore, we are developing schoolwide behavior expectations. This will help students and adults have a common language for behavior throughout our school. We hope to send a feedback document to families by the end of the week.

Drop off and pick up are also two areas of concern. The Office of Environmental Health and Safety is collaborating with us to develop a safe drop-off valet. To improve safety:

  • Please be safe when dropping students off.

  • Please do not park in the employee lot.

  • Please make sure to park on the correct side of the street.

  • Avoid blocking the road.

  • Follow all guidelines on road signs.

Thank you to families who park safely, walk students to the gate, and follow the morning visitor policies. Your support is appreciated.

We are processing some instructional aides in HR. In addition, we are looking for additional staff to support classroom instruction and supervision. If you know a potential candidate, they can email their resume and introduction letter to [email protected]. Additional staff members will reduce the adult-to-student ratio on campus and in classrooms.

Our school has a no homework policy. However, children should read for 20-30 minutes nightly, independently, or with another reader. Journaling nightly also supports writers’ development, as children’s writing becomes stronger the more they write. Finally, we are working to develop The Professional Student Toolkit, which contains a set of choice-based activities for students to continue their studies independently at home. We will share information soon. In the meantime, check out the UCLA Math Project’s Math at Home website for fun ideas to get kids thinking and talking about math, which also supports Cognitively Guided Instruction that occurs at school.

  • Monday 10/3 – English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC) Orientation at 3:00 on Zoom for parents of English learners
