CDA Community,

We will use this platform to house communications since March 10, 2020, when the Covid-19 / coronavirus health crisis started to affect our day-to-day operations. Make sure to check the district’s website for more up-to-date information. If you are not receiving their communications by phone or email, please email me so that we can check your contact information in our student data system.

Stay well and together we will get through this crisis. Thanks.

Dear CDA Families,

Yesterday, Superintendent Beutner reached out to families with the news of LAUSD’s phased-in approach to hybrid, in-person learning for those families who chose it as an option for their child(ren). (Students whose families chose online will continue learning remotely offsite.) Most elementary schools will reopen the week of April 19th, with the phase-in schedule below. We have used the data from the Program Selection Survey, trying our best to honor requests for AM or PM and to minimize movement for students from their current teacher to another teacher. Because a majority of our families have chosen hybrid, in-person, there will in some cases be a change in teacher. All online classes will be offered during the PM cohort times. New class and cohort assignments will be shared by email the week of April 12th. Assignments will be final, but program selection, hybrid or online, can be changed every two weeks. Students whose families did not respond to the survey will be scheduled in an online class. Students whose families chose hybrid must receive a COVID test 7 days prior to their start date and will be tested bi-weekly on-site thereafter. The linked FAQ from Board Member Nick Melvoin’s Town Hall may also be helpful.

Additionally, you will notice below that we have to stagger arrivals and dismissals in order to mitigate traffic. A huge thank goes to our beautification committee who have stepped up to assist us with signage and directional arrows to support students in knowing how they are to move around campus. Listed below are the entrance and exit gates for each grade level with their start and end of times. If siblings have the same start and end times, they can enter and exit through the gate of the younger sibling. If they have different start and end tines, the older students can either wait 15 minutes if they share a gate with their siblings or will need to walk, bike, or scooter to their entrance gate for their later arrival. Dismissal will work similarly. If we find that we are able to get students in more quickly, these times may be adjusted. Every child will have to answer the questions linked or show us their Daily Pass, and their temperature will be checked with a no touch thermometer. We highly recommend that students initially be accompanied by a guardian, especially our younger ones, but if they come alone and have a fever over 99.9, they will be escorted to an isolation area and monitored by a staff member until their guardians arrive for pick up. Students at all times have to be checked out through our main office and will meet their parents once that has been done at our handicapped gate in the parking lot. (Maps will be shared in April to support families.) We will not be offering valet drop off or pick up initially, and no adult family members will be allowed on campus to escort or pick up their children to or from class once they have been screened or dismissed respectively. Once we learn our routines, valet may be offered. Please do not park in our parking lots, as the pedestrian path in the main lot will be used for two of our grade levels to arrive and leave. Any family who expressed a need in childcare will be offered that option (08:30 AM – 04:00 PM) whether their child is in a PM or AM cohort. More details are forthcoming as to how that will work for drop off and/or pick up. The district is erecting outdoor tents with power, furniture, and WiFi. Students will have options to complete asynchronous work with adult support in a 14:1, student:adult ratio, and some time to use the play yard within an assigned cohort. All students on campus for our hybrid model will always remain with their cohort and will also have some outdoor play and PE options. More details on those options as well will be shared.

Finally, a huge debt of gratitude goes to our yearbook committee for arranging and safely orchestrating two picture day opportunities. If you were unable to make it to the YMCA in west LA, they are offering guidance here for how to make sure your child has a class picture in our yearbook. Deadline for getting this done is March 31st.

Again, I know there is lots of information to take in. We will be having a Coffee and Tea on Monday, April 5th, when we return from Spring Break, at 09:30 AM, Zoom invite emailed, during which I can answer questions. I will record the meeting. My next update will be emailed on Sunday, April 4th. All of our communications are archived here.

Take care, stay well and COVID negative, minimize spread, and have a restful Spring Break. Thanks.
