CDA Community,

We will use this platform to house communications since March 10, 2020, when the Covid-19 / coronavirus health crisis started to affect our day-to-day operations. Make sure to check the district’s website for more up-to-date information. If you are not receiving their communications by phone or email, please email me so that we can check your contact information in our student data system.

Stay well and together we will get through this crisis. Thanks.

Dear CDA Families,

As we begin week 9 of our remote start to the school year, we continue to be heartened by our students’ resilience and creativity in our virtual spaces and the ways in which they are supported by you and our teachers. Thanks for making the most of a situation many of us hoped to avoid. Our combined efforts have made us all stronger and able to tackle any challenge. Below are this week’s updates.

  1. Monday morning assembly will continue on Monday, October 12th, 09:00 AM. I am going to resume sharing invites for this event and our story times, as I know some of us have had challenges accessing the Zoom meetings. In an effort to ensure our students’ synchronous engagement was being tracked, we had asked students to access all meetings through their Schoology pages, which they should still make every effort to do, but these meetings are not as essential in terms of the data the district is using to track participation. Thanks for your patience as we do our best to work within guidelines. This week we would like to highlight some of our 1st grade students, so if your child would be willing to share a story, please email me directly, and I will do my best to highlight a few perspectives. I look forward to connecting with folks virtually. Remember, one sign in per family.
  2. Dr. Adaina Brown, Local District’s West’s new superintendent, is hosting a town hall on Thursday, October 15th, at 6:00 PM. Please join us as she introduces our Community of Schools Administrators, Local District West’s Teacher of the Year, and a student board member. She will also be sharing her vision for our schools.
  3. Please look for an email from me tomorrow inviting you to take part in LAUSD’s COVID-19’s virus testing program. Superintendent Beutner is asking parents to make an appointment for an initial test now to help them prepare for the opening of schools for in-person instruction.  Although the date when schools will re-open for in-person instruction is not yet known, taking an initial test now will provide valuable information about the incidence of COVID-19 in the communities LAUSD serves.
  4. Our second Coffee and Tea with the Principal was well attended. Thanks to everyone who was able to join. For an overview of what was covered, please see linked presentation. A message regarding gifted assessments and timelines is here. Feel free to email me with any questions.
  5. The deadline for the district’s eChoices application process is November 13th, information for which can be found here. Information is also highlighted in the October 1 Town Hall presentation found on our Venice Community of Schools webpage at the 43 minute 45 second mark.
  6. Our amazing art teacher, Ms. Nguyen, will be starting student self-portraits this week for our annual Square 1 Art project fundraiser. Templates that students will need have been shared, and we will also have them available for pick up in front of our school. This is an important fundraiser that raises over $5,000 each year, so we are grateful to all of our families who take part.
  7. Our second restaurant fundraiser at Sharky’s in Marina del Rey is this week! See linked flyer for details. We will be competing with two other schools to raise the most money, and the school that generates the most sales will receive an extra $500. I will be making their guacamole on Thursday, October 15th, at noon and plan to attend the fundraiser that evening after the town hall.
  8. We will continue with our Storytime with Principal Jenkins. This week, I will need to read with our students in TK through second grade on Wednesday, not Tuesday. Grade 3 through 5 will still meet on Thursday. I will be reading a favorite story of mine on Wednesday. Students can access the meeting invites on their Schoology pages and links were emailed.
  9. Finally, our Booster Club and I are organizing a third round of Halloween themed Wheel and Waves, dates and times for which are below. This will be a more festive round of safe contact with our students’ peers and their families. Our last Wheel and Wave for our second round is Tuesday, fifth grade! Thanks.

Stay safe and well and hope to see you remotely or in person soon. Take care.
