CDA Community,

We will use this platform to house communications since March 10, 2020, when the Covid-19 / coronavirus health crisis started to affect our day-to-day operations. Make sure to check the district’s website for more up-to-date information. If you are not receiving their communications by phone or email, please email me so that we can check your contact information in our student data system.

Stay well and together we will get through this crisis. Thanks.

Dear CDA Families,

Well, it’s October and hopefully we can look forward to cooler weather! We continue to be uplifted by the engagement of our students and their teachers and your support as we navigate our remote start to the school year. Below are our updates for week 8. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have questions. Thanks as always for your continued engagement and support.

  1. It was reported recently that a limited number of elementary schools would be able to apply for waivers to reopen. Schools that serve the neediest populations would receive priority. Any reopening our own school would only happen if deemed safe and appropriate by the Los Angeles Unified School District. We are unable to apply for a waiver on our own as we are under the umbrella of LAUSD. My best recommendation is to watch live or streamed the Superintendent’s weekly updates on Mondays. We are all hopeful to be back on campus this school year. Thanks for doing your part in ensuring that may be possible.
  2. Monday morning assembly will continue on Monday, October 5th, 09:00 AM. I will share the invite via students’ Schoology course pages. This week we would like to highlight some of our 2nd grade students, so if your child would be willing to share a story, please email me directly, and I will do my best to highlight a few perspectives. I look forward to connecting with folks virtually. Remember, one sign in per family.
  3. Our school was one of two that was highlighted at the Venice Community of Schools Town Hall hosted by our administrator, Erick Hansen. Thanks to all of our families who were able to attend. If you want to listen to what I had to say about our school, you can go here and scroll down to Latest Town Hall Meeting and fast forward to the one hour, eighteen second mark.
  4. Our second Coffee and Tea with the Principal will be this Wednesday, October 7th, at 11:00 AM, Zoom meeting invite emailed. This month’s topics will be Gifted and Talented Programs and the district’s eChoices application process, the application window for which closes on November 13th, and information for which can be found here and also highlighted in the Town Hall presentation mentioned above at the 43 minute 45 second mark. Our Coffee and Tea is also an opportunity to share input and ideas around how we are engaging our students remotely. If you are unable to attend, do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions or concerns. We want to make sure we are working collaboratively to accommodate everyone’s needs to the extent possible.
  5. It’s been great to see so many of our parents and students at our second round of Wheel and Waves, dates for which are below. Our amazing art teacher, Ms. Nguyen, will be starting student self-portraits the week of October 12th for our annual Square 1 Art project fundraiser. Templates that they will need will be shared, and we will also have them available for pick up in front of our school and at our next 3 Wheel and Waves.
  6. It’s that time of year again for the popular Square 1 Art fundraiser. It’s a great opportunity for your child to create personalized holiday gifts for the entire family. You’ll soon receive an email from your room parent with information on the Square 1 Art Fundraiser, including a link to download the art paper as well as a link to upload the finished drawing. Students will work on their drawings in Art Class with Ms. Nguyen during the week of October 12. So, have your Art Paper ready to go. The deadline to upload your student’s completed work is Tuesday, October 27th. Once you’ve uploaded your child’s artwork to the Square 1 Art link, you may begin ordering your keepsakes. The deadline to order Square 1 Art gifts is November 20th.  We will schedule a pick-up date at CDA sometime in early December.
  7. Our second restaurant fundraiser at Sharky’s in Marina del Rey is just around the corner, the week of October 12th. See linked flyer for details. We will be competing with two other schools to raise the most money, and the school that generates the most sales will receive an extra $500. I will be making their guacamole on Thursday, October 15th, at noon.
  8. We will continue with our Storytime with Principal Jenkins on Tuesdays (TK-2) and Thursdays (Grades 3-5) at 1:45 PM. Students can access the meeting invites on their Schoology pages. If they are unable to find those links, please email your teachers or me.
  9. There are some opportunities for parents that I wanted to share. Local District West is hosting a series of parent workshops and the Airport Marina Counseling Service is hosting virtual parenting workshops for a fee.
  10. Finally, our Booster Club and I are organizing a third round of Halloween themed Wheel and Waves, dates and times for which are below. This will be a more festive round of safe contact with our students’ peers and their families. More details to come, but I wanted to give families fair warning! Thanks.

Stay safe and well and hope to see you remotely or in person soon. Take care.
