Reading Workshop is a method of teaching reading that provides a structure to the teaching of reading in which students can flourish and develop a love of reading. During workshop time, they will draw upon a repertoire of skills, tools, strategies, and habits as they read high-interest, accessible books that they choose and find engaging. Teachers model a love of reading and read to their students while learners are provided long stretches of time to read, receive explicit instruction in the process and skills of proficient reading, talk to their peers and their teachers in response to texts, and receive frequent feedback and instruction tailored to their needs. In conjunction with writing workshop, learners receive a balanced approach to language arts that treats each as an important aspect of a learner’s life. Learners should love to write just as much as they love to read.
