CDA GROWS is excited to announce the near completion of our newest and largest garden located on the Garfield Avenue side of campus. The garden’s construction was funded by a $25,000 SEEDs grant awarded by LAUSD and a $2,000 grant from the Abbot Kinney Festival Association. Our partners at Elow Landscape Design and Build have generously offered to provide much needed soil and mulch on an ongoing basis in addition to their donation of a pallet-house entry way, seating bench for the children, and two large tree planters.

The garden consists of ten 8 x 4 foot raised beds designed and built by parent volunteers and will be surrounded by fencing funded by the SEEDs grant. Students in gardening will continue to receive hands-on science instruction in the new and old gardens from Ms. Wolfe, the gardening teacher. With the help of parent volunteers, other classes who have not been assigned to gardening will have the option of adopting a garden bed for teacher-designed instructional use. We desire for CDA to be on the forefront of quality gardening instruction that is integrated with the regular classroom curriculum across all grade levels–and this garden will make that dream possible.

Other additions to the GROWS program include the purchase of 20 vermipost bins to be used in conjunction with our already established compost program and improved students maintenance of our native-landscaped and fruit tree areas.

We are always looking for volunteers to join our team, green-thumbed or not! If you are interested in learning more about supporting GROWS, please contact Tracy Carpenter [email protected].
